Request for Help with Video Software
One of the things we've been brainstorming at the Hatch discipline head meetings is a project that will be a big collaboration between the 7 disciplines - more details to come. Enough to say we are all excited about it! The end result of the collaboration will be a final installation as well as a stop motion video about it. I am going to be documenting the project, and would like to find someone knowledgeable with video editing software who might be interested in helping me and/or collaborating on this project with me. If you are interested, please contact me at lynne@lynneharty.com

PROGRESS REPORT, October 27, 2010
For those of you that are interested in keeping up with the progress we've made for Hatch Photography 2011, here is an update.
First of all, the Board is fully in place with Craig McAnsh in charge of it - Craig has already put enormous energy, time and enthusiasm in his role at running the helm, and last week they hired Big Bridge as the marketing agency for Hatch. This is great news as we can do a better job of explaining what Hatch is all about through media and an improved website.
As for photography specifically, Brie Castell (photographer and owner of the Castell Gallery) has agreed to co-chair the photography discipline with me, and that is a huge help. Also Diana Stoll, who was involved last year on our panel and is senior editor of Aperture Magazine, has been actively involved by fielding suggestions for mentors. Diana is thinking BIG, and has agreed to take on the job of approaching mentors from our wish list. We will also be calling for Groundbreakers to work with the mentors, but that will come much later.
I am planning to put together another night time projection as we did last year, and am investigating different venues for that. We would like to have a theme that is more specific than last year and we will put out a broader call for entries since we have time to plan for it this year. Stay tuned for info on this and feel free to offer ideas on themes. f
Another idea that we are working on is a "community photo project" where individuals can submit one image and have it printed on a large format printer and have it displayed - we are hoping to get a sponsor for this. I would like for this to be in a space that the public can browse and participate in. There will also be a theme for this project as well, and file size requirements so that we aren't getting low res iphone photo files!
There will be workshops and panels that will be formulated once we know who our mentors will be.
We may show films about photography - please submit any suggestions you have.
Finally, I'm working on a project that is an inter disciplinary project that will culminate in the production of an actual structure that I will create a stop motion video of to show during Hatch. Stay tuned for details on that.
We will need lots of volunteers to work at the various sites, to jury images for the slide show, to field submissions from groundbreakers, to photograph things going on, to drive mentors around and a lot of other things, so be thinking of what sort of time you are willing to give and in what capacity. Hatch is going to be April 14-17, 2011. For those of you who have not been, there are workshops, movies and panels during the day and networking events/parties at night.

LOOKING FOR SPONSORS
Does anyone have any contacts with Epson or Canon? We want to see if either company would sponsor the community photography project we discussed. The idea is not completely hashed out yet, but we are still wanting to turn the wheels a bit.

Photography Mentors Needed for Hatch
If you have a suggestion for a photographer that you would like to
suggest inviting as a mentor for Hatch, please send Lynne Harty an
email at lynne@lynneharty.com. Please limit your suggestions to 1 or 2
and provide a website and reason that you think they would be good
mentors. We need two mentors that are willing to work closely with up
and coming talent (aka "groundbreakers") as well as present a slide
show/talk or demonstration. Ideally we are looking for one fine art
photographer and a commercial one, but for both think innovative,
original and inspiring. How do they incorporate the new technologies?
We can offer a free plane ticket and lodging at the Grove Park Inn,
and most meals are provided as well.

WELCOME!
Welcome to the HATCHfest Asheville Photography forum – the purpose is to collect ideas for creating an educational, inspiring and entertaining event next year – April 14th – 17th in downtown Asheville. While we are focusing here on photography, we are also hoping to collaborate with the other disciplines in Hatch which include film, music, journalism, architecture, fashion and design technology. We welcome participation from the community through contribution of ideas, talents and volunteer help, so please follow us to keep up to date on our progress.
What is HATCH? HATCH is a year round non-profit organization, designed to develop and foster the growth of creative minds in various industries through mentorship, exposure and networking. Since it’s inception in 2004, HATCH has successfully developed an environment, from HATCHfest to HATCHlabs that strikes the enthusiasm and stimulation of young artist’s creativity throughout the world, by connecting new filmmakers, musicians, photographers, designers, architects, writers and fine artists with award-winning veterans in the entertainment industry. The inspiration of one affects the lives of millions.

We had our first HATCH fest Photography meeting June 14th at the Castell Gallery and had about 10 people show up. The purpose of the meeting was to brainstorm a wish list for next year’s HATCH in terms of photography. I will list some of the ideas – feel free to add your own. While this may seem all over the place (it is!), it is in the spirit of true random expression of ideas that we begin here. The culling process will happen later once a direction is established.
So, here you have some of the initial ideas:
1 – Include a panel or exhibit with the history of photography as it’s theme.
2 – Have demos of old photographic processes, such as wet collodion printing and large format photography.
3 – Show alternative modern processes excluding the standard of giclees.
4 – Find ways to exhibit photography that are out of the box – not just framed prints on blank walls. We will likely repeat the nighttime slide show projection that we did last year, as an example.
5 – Find mentors to come present their work to the larger group, but possibly also pair them with “groundbreakers” to fulfill the mentoring piece of HATCH.
6 – Arrange a fundraiser to come up with the money to give honorariums for the mentors and airfare. Having a photo booth at the event is one way to raise funds.
7 – Find sponsors for the above.
8 – Get the local universities involved.
9 – Community Show – find sponsor such as Epson or Canon that will sponsor a community show where people can bring one file in and have it printed, and then artfully displayed in a gallery space during Hatch.
10 – Stage a huge group photo of HATCH participants.
11 – Ask local ad execs, teachers, museum and gallery curators to host a portfolio review.
12 – Collaborate with Fashion participants to stage storefront windows combining the two disciplines.
13 – Show pertinent films such as September Issue. Maybe show outside somewhere at night.
14 – What is a final product that participants can work on and “touch”? Such as the community project idea.
15 – Look into NC Arts Grants to fund mentors.
16 – Have some kind of contest either during or before and have rewards for it.
17 – Appoint someone or several people to be on top of social media to alert interested people of happenings.
